The Tramontana Foundation 2011 Supported Project
The Kibera slum originated in 1920 as an informal settlement of Nubian soldiers during the British Colonial Government. After independence in 1963, the Kenyan Government created several types of illegal housing, including unauthorized settlement Kibera. Since 1970, land owners have rented these lands to the very poor who could ill-afford the rent.
Kibera is now a multi-ethnic area, with residents from various parts of Kenya and neighbouring countries. This multi-ethnic nature attached to the tribalism of Kenyan politics has led Kibera as the focus of small ethnic conflict 100 years ago (in 2008, many residents had to leave because of post-election violence).
The project aims to rescue street children from dangerous environment. After they are rescued, the children go through rehabilitation in social, educational and psychological program to ensure their reintegration into society. The project will also establish local networks that can respond to emergency situations of children, raise awareness about children’s rights and ensure that shareholders are involved in the whole process. Major activities include: day and night visits to the streets, the street food and emergency response, counselling, provision of basic needs, home visits and support to schools, individual training sessions, informal education, medical care and temporary accommodation.
The Project is expected to last between 2 and 3 years, with the hope that the children will successfully re-integrate into society. This will depend on the risk levels of children and the family dynamics in the context of the community.
Therefore this specific project requests funds to build and furnish the rescue residence within the Kibera community and the Tramontana Foundation is offering its direct support and providing some funding in accordance with our quarterly results.
